FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Rafael Furcal, a former Major League Baseball All-Star shortstop, turned himself in on Wednesday at the Broward County jail to face two felony charges related to an incident earlier in the week.
The 47-year-old Weston resident is charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and throwing a deadly missile into an occupied vehicle, according to court and arrest records. The incident allegedly took place on Monday, though further details, including the exact location of the incident, have not been disclosed. The Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) was listed as the filing agency, but a BSO spokesperson referred questions to Sunrise Police.
Arrest documents reveal that Furcal voluntarily self-surrendered to authorities at around 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday. An attached warrant, signed by a Sunrise Police Department detective, listed the charges but did not provide additional information about what led to them.
A native of the Dominican Republic, Furcal had a 14-season career in Major League Baseball, playing for teams like the Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers, and St. Louis Cardinals. He was named the National League Rookie of the Year in 2000 and won a World Series with the Cardinals in 2011. Furcal finished his career in South Florida in 2014 with the Miami Marlins.
This isn’t the first time Furcal has been in trouble with the law. During his time with the Braves, he was arrested twice for driving under the influence in Georgia in 2000 and 2004.
Furcal was released on a $7,500 bond following his arrest. Local 10 News has reached out to Sunrise Police for further details.
