by Sophia Bennett

Kanawha County authorities have arrested a man accused of stealing tens of thousands of dollars from an elderly couple in Charleston.

Preston Tyrell Hugle, 49, faces multiple charges, including fraud and related activity in connection with an access device, credit card fraud, computer fraud, identity theft, burglary, petit and grand larceny, and financial exploitation of an elderly or incapacitated person, according to jail records.

Detectives began investigating in August 2025 after discovering a fraudulent bank account linked to the couple. Investigators say $48,000 was taken through unauthorized transactions and transfers.

Surveillance footage from a neighbor’s doorbell camera reportedly shows Hugle tampering with the victims’ mailbox around the time a fraudulent debit card was activated. Additional footage allegedly shows him using the stolen card at multiple Charleston businesses.

Hugle remains in custody at South Central Regional Jail awaiting further court proceedings.
