Two days after 26-year-old Preeti died by suicide due to alleged dowry harassment in Tirupur, her husband and in-laws were arrested on Thursday.
The arrested include Preeti’s husband, Satheeswar, 30, and his parents, Vijayakumar and Uma.
Preeti, from Friends Garden in Tirupur, had married Satheeswar of Veerappan Sathiran in Erode on September 15, 2024. Her family had given 120 sovereigns of gold, ₹25 lakh in cash, and a car worth ₹38 lakh as dowry.
According to reports, after Preeti’s family sold a property, her husband and mother-in-law demanded a share of the proceeds. Distressed by the harassment, Preeti had gone to her mother’s house on July 11 and tragically took her life on Tuesday while her mother was away.
Tirupur revenue divisional officer Mohanasundaram visited Preeti’s family on Wednesday. Further investigation into the dowry harassment and circumstances of her death is ongoing.
