In a tragic incident in northeast Delhi’s Karawal Nagar, 33-year-old Pradeep Kumar allegedly murdered his wife, Jayashree, and their two minor daughters by strangulation. The crime took place at their home in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Colony on Saturday morning.
Police received information around 7:15 am and swiftly dispatched senior officers, crime experts, and forensic teams to the scene. The bodies were sent for postmortem examination as a murder case was registered immediately.
Pradeep Kumar fled after the killings but was arrested within hours following a police manhunt. During interrogation, he confessed to the murders, citing anger over a dispute with his wife. Investigators are still probing to uncover the full motive.
According to police, the dispute arose after Jayashree expressed her wish to visit her parental home for Rakshabandhan, which enraged Kumar. Jayashree’s brother, Chandrabhan, revealed that Kumar had a history of drinking and gambling, frequently leading to conflicts. He also claimed that Kumar had previously thrown Jayashree out of the house multiple times.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast), Ashish Mishra, confirmed that Kumar strangled his wife and daughters. The police are gathering more evidence to build a strong case. Cut marks found on Kumar’s hand suggest he might have attempted suicide after the murders.
Investigations further revealed that Kumar worked as an aadhatia (commission agent) in local markets but developed a gambling addiction, leading to severe financial losses. His financial instability worsened after the death of his father three years ago, who was the primary breadwinner for the family. This economic downturn contributed to Kumar’s increased irritability and frequent domestic tensions.
The police continue to investigate the case, seeking to understand the deeper reasons behind this heartbreaking family tragedy.
