The Delhi Police have arrested Poonam Yadav (34), a resident of Kanpur, for allegedly stealing a gold ring from a jewellery shop in Laxmi Nagar during the Diwali rush. Police said Yadav is part of an inter-state gang of women thieves involved in multiple gold thefts across Delhi-NCR.
According to officials, on October 19, amid heavy festive crowds, three women entered a jewellery store and stole a 5.4-gram gold ring before escaping. The theft was captured on CCTV cameras, and the footage went viral on social media, prompting swift police action.
Following an e-FIR registration, several police teams were formed to identify and locate the culprits. Investigators analysed CCTV footage and gathered intelligence that led them to Etawah district in Uttar Pradesh. Acting on specific leads, a Delhi Police team conducted a raid in Village Chakwa Khurd on October 28, arresting Poonam Yadav.
She was subsequently brought to Delhi for interrogation, where she confessed to committing similar thefts in Delhi’s Chandni Chowk and Gurugram with her Kanpur-based associates.
Police said efforts are underway to trace and arrest other members of the gang involved in the series of jewellery thefts during the festive season.
