In a significant development in the ongoing crackdown on cybercrime, the Ambala Cyber Crime Police have arrested two individuals — Piyush Gupta, a resident of Professor Colony, Yamunanagar, and Lovkesh, from Tyagi Garden, Yamunanagar — in connection with a growing digital arrest scam.
The arrests were made on May 9, 2025, under the direction of Ambala Superintendent of Police Ajit Singh Shekhawat. Following court orders, both accused were remanded to police custody for three days.
During the interrogation, police recovered Rs1.65 lakh in cash and three mobile phones. Additionally, Rs2 lakh found in their bank accounts was frozen. Authorities revealed that the accused had been transacting with the scam’s mastermind using the Biggo mobile application, a platform now under scrutiny.
To date, 13 individuals have been arrested in connection with the case, with Rs27 lakh recovered, and Rs17 lakh frozen in various accounts linked to the fraud.
Investigators confirmed that the scam has national reach, with nearly 90 online complaints filed across Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Goa, and other states. Victims were duped through false claims of legal action and coerced into paying money under the pretense of resolving non-existent criminal charges.
The Ambala Cyber Crime unit continues to probe the wider network behind the scam and urges the public to report suspicious digital communications and avoid falling prey to threats demanding payments under legal pretenses.
