A London man has been sentenced to life in prison after admitting to killing his own brother in a tragic case that has deeply affected the local community.

Peter John, 59, from Hackney, pleaded guilty to the murder of his 60-year-old brother, Miller John. The sentencing took place at Inner London Crown Court on Thursday, 18 December. The court ruled that he must serve a minimum of 15 years before being eligible for parole.

On 3 March, Peter John went to Stoke Newington police station shortly after 10am. He contacted emergency services outside the station and admitted responsibility for his brother’s death. Officers responded immediately, and Peter explained that he had discovered his brother deceased at their shared home earlier that morning.

Police and paramedics later attended the brothers’ residence on Homerton Road, where Miller John was pronounced dead at the scene. An investigation was launched, and Peter was arrested and charged within 24 hours.

Detectives gathered evidence, including CCTV footage, to establish the sequence of events leading up to the incident. The case was later resolved following Peter’s guilty plea.

Detective Inspector John Marriott expressed sympathy for the family, saying the sentencing would hopefully bring some comfort after months of distress. He added that officers had worked closely with the family throughout the investigation to provide ongoing support.

The case highlights the devastating impact of violent crime within families and the long-lasting consequences for those affected.
