Comedian Denies Charges After Vehicle Search Leads to Arrest

by Sophia Bennett

Comedian Paul Rodriguez is set to appear in court on April 25 after being arrested for drug possession in Burbank. The 70-year-old comedian, known for his work in stand-up and television, was a passenger in a vehicle that was stopped for a code violation at around 7:30 p.m. on Friday. According to the Burbank Police Department, a search of the vehicle revealed narcotics, leading to Rodriguez’s arrest.

Rodriguez, who was released on Saturday, denies the charges, claiming he was sleeping in the passenger seat when an officer woke him up. He also described the encounter as being overly aggressive, alleging that the officer, whom he identified as “Caucasian,” was on a “power trip.” Rodriguez added that he was “roughed up” by the police during the incident and that the narcotics found in the car were not his, but belonged to a female friend who was driving.

The comedian was booked at Burbank City Jail for possession of narcotics, although details on the type of drugs have not been disclosed. Rodriguez was later released with a citation to appear in court on April 25, where a city attorney will decide if formal charges will be filed. Meanwhile, his friend remains in custody for outstanding warrants.
