The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is preparing its final prosecution complaint in the teachers recruitment corruption case in West Bengal. The agency will file the complaint after questioning Partha Chatterjee and his alleged aide Arpita Mukherjee, sources told the media.
Officials said the fresh summons were issued because new references to Chatterjee and Mukherjee were discovered in incriminating documents related to the SSC teachers recruitment scam. The duo is expected to be questioned separately.
Background:
Chatterjee was arrested in July 2022 in connection with the School Service Commission (SSC) teachers recruitment corruption case.
Arpita Mukherjee was also arrested after authorities reportedly recovered cash and ornaments from her apartment.
Investigations are ongoing by both the ED and the CBI.
Judicial Developments:
The Supreme Court directed that Chatterjee could be released only after the trial court completes examination of material witnesses within two months.
A division bench comprising Justices MM Sundresh and NK Singh emphasized that Chatterjee had already spent nearly three years in jail, noting that prolonged incarceration could constitute a travesty of justice.
The ED is expected to finalize the prosecution complaint soon, potentially leading to additional legal proceedings against the former minister and his aide.
