Panchayat President Bharathi Arrested for Gold Theft

Koyambedu police nab woman stealing gold chain

The Koyambedu police have arrested Bharathi (56), the village panchayat president of Nariyambattu in Tirupattur district, for allegedly stealing a four-sovereign gold chain from a passenger on a state transport bus.

The victim, Varalakshmi (50) of Nelkundram Reddy Street, Chennai, was returning from Kancheepuram on a TNSTC bus on July 3 with the jewellery in her handbag. Upon reaching home, she discovered the gold chain missing and immediately lodged a complaint with Koyambedu police.

CCTV footage from Nelkundram revealed a woman taking the jewellery. Police traced the suspect to Tirupattur, arrested her, and brought her to Chennai for questioning. Investigations revealed Bharathi had multiple pending cases in Tirupattur, Vellore, Ambur, and Vrudhampattu. She has been remanded in judicial custody.
