BANGKOK, Thailand (Bangkok Post) – A Pakistani man has been arrested in Bangkok after allegedly assuming the identity of a deceased Thai citizen for over a decade. This fraudulent identity allowed him to access public services and benefits meant for Thai citizens, according to Thai police.
The suspect, identified as Zeshan, 41, was arrested in a raid on a house in Bangkok’s Thung Khru district on Wednesday. He had been on the run after an arrest warrant was issued by the Criminal Court earlier that week.
Pol Maj Gen Witthaya Sriprasertphab, commander of the Crime Suppression Division, stated that Zeshan is facing multiple charges, including falsifying official documents such as a national ID card and passport. The suspect took the identity of a Thai man who died over 10 years ago, but his death was never officially reported to authorities by his family, which allowed Zeshan to assume the deceased man’s identity.
Zeshan also used the fake ID card to apply for a passport, which he used to travel in and out of Thailand more than 100 times. Authorities are investigating the scope of Zeshan’s fraudulent activities and are trying to determine if others were involved in the scheme.
Despite the allegations, Zeshan has denied the charges against him. Police have expanded their investigation, and more details are expected to emerge as the case unfolds.
