In a swift and effective operation, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of West Bengal Police recovered the stolen Padma Shri award of renowned former Indian swimmer Bula Chowdhury within 48 hours of the crime being reported. One individual has been arrested in connection with the theft.
The prestigious award, along with other trophies and medals, was stolen from Chowdhury’s ancestral residence in Hind-Motor, Hooghly district, where they were displayed. Although Bula Chowdhury currently resides in Kasba, South Kolkata, she routinely visits her ancestral home to inspect her memorabilia.
The theft was discovered last Friday, when Chowdhury noticed her Padma Shri shield missing, along with other honors. The initial investigation by Hooghly police was quickly handed over to the CID, which led to the recovery and arrest within two days.
A CID official confirmed the recovery, stating that more details would be shared in a press conference by the Hooghly District Police Superintendent.
Chowdhury, who is also a recipient of the Arjuna Award and served as a CPI(M) legislator from 2006 to 2011, expressed her gratitude to the police for their quick action.
Her brother, Milan Chowdhury, highlighted that the house had previously been targeted by thieves on three separate occasions. Despite earlier police complaints and a brief police picket, attempted burglaries continued.
This incident has reignited concerns about security at homes preserving national honors, especially those of decorated sports personalities.
