Bareilly police have arrested 40-year-old Om Sharan Maurya for murdering his wife, Amarwati (35), and attempting to mislead investigators by staging the crime as a highway robbery.
According to SSP Bareilly Anurag Arya, the couple had visited the Purnagiri temple early Thursday. Maurya initially claimed that on their way back near Usaitha village on the Aonla-Wazirganj Highway, four men attacked them, looted their valuables, and stabbed Amarwati when she resisted. Maurya alleged he only suffered minor chest scratches, while his wife died from a deep facial injury.
However, SP (North) Anshika Verma revealed that Maurya’s story collapsed under interrogation. The woman’s jewellery, bag, phone, and their bike were found at the crime scene, proving nothing was stolen and the robbery claim was fabricated.
Investigations uncovered the murder was premeditated. Maurya confessed to being in an illicit relationship with another woman who pressured him to kill Amarwati, considering her an obstacle.
Police have booked Maurya under BNS Section 103 (murder), and the woman involved will also be arrested for criminal conspiracy, SSP Arya said.
