WELLFORD, S.C. — A police officer from Anderson, South Carolina, is facing criminal charges after allegedly pointing a gun at a woman and her children during a road rage incident on Interstate 85.
According to the Wellford Police Department, the incident occurred around 5:45 p.m. on Sunday, near mile marker 67 on I-85 South. Responding officers directed both vehicles involved to a nearby parking lot at Nikita’s on Greenville Highway.
An incident report states that Paige Newell, an officer with the Anderson Police Department, allegedly pointed a firearm at a woman and her children during a confrontation. The victim also claimed Newell intentionally backed into her vehicle when parking. The victim’s children confirmed that Newell had displayed a weapon.
Newell denied pointing a gun, telling officers she “knew better” as a law enforcement professional. She claimed the vehicle contact happened because she was “blocked in.”
Newell was charged with pointing and presenting a firearm, booked into the Spartanburg County Detention Center, and released on a personal recognizance (PR) bond the following day.
Her firearm was seized and returned to the Anderson Police Department. Officials confirmed Newell has been placed on unpaid administrative leave pending further investigation.
