VAN BUREN, Ark. — A Van Buren police officer, Jason Matthew Scites, 45, was arrested on Monday, July 21, for alleged internet stalking of a child, according to the Arkansas State Police (ASP).

Authorities revealed that a multi-agency investigation uncovered inappropriate online communication between Scites and a minor. Following his arrest, Van Buren Police Chief Jonathan Wear immediately terminated Scites and submitted a request for decertification to the Arkansas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Training (CLEST).

As of Tuesday afternoon, Scites remains in custody without an assigned bond. His court appearance is set for July 23, confirmed by Prosecutor Kevin Holmes.

The Van Buren Police Department issued a statement condemning Scites’ actions, saying they do not reflect the values of the department and reaffirming their commitment to transparency, accountability, and ethical policing.

“While this incident may impact trust in our profession, we will continue working to maintain the confidence of those we serve,” said Chief Wear.
