A South Brunswick police officer has been arrested and charged with stealing more than $75,000 from his local Police Benevolent Association (PBA), according to Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago.
Patrolman First Class Abraham “Jason” Gassman, 53, a 19-year veteran of the department, turned himself in on July 16 and was taken to the Monmouth County Correctional Institution. He faces a range of criminal charges, including official misconduct and theft by deception (second-degree), hindering apprehension, additional counts of misconduct and theft by deception (third-degree), falsifying records (fourth-degree), and shoplifting, a disorderly persons offense.
Prosecutors plan to request that Gassman be barred from contacting his former PBA executive board, surrender any firearms, and submit to monthly reporting during legal proceedings.
An investigation conducted by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Professional Responsibility Unit uncovered that earlier this year, Gassman allegedly shoplifted about $100 worth of bedding items from a department store in Ocean Township and fled the scene in his official police vehicle.
Further investigation revealed Gassman, who had served as treasurer for South Brunswick PBA Local No. 166 since 2009, misused his position to steal more than $75,000 over the past six years. Authorities say he used the PBA credit card for personal expenses including patio furniture, a home gym kit, vacuums, televisions, storage containers, propane, and food. He also reportedly took cash proceeds from charity fundraisers and events.
In one instance, Gassman allegedly used the PBA credit card to cover personal lodging, food, parking, and fuel during a business trip and then filed a purchase order with the department to be reimbursed. He is also accused of submitting false financial documents to the PBA’s accountant and locking out PBA leadership by changing the credit card account password when questioned.
South Brunswick Police Chief Raymond J. Hayducka confirmed Gassman was suspended without pay following a review of the allegations. Hayducka stated that the officer’s actions were a violation of the department’s core values and praised the officers who reported the misconduct.
PBA Chapter President Gerald Sarno echoed the department’s commitment to accountability and integrity, stating the PBA would continue to uphold the trust of the South Brunswick community.
Monmouth County Assistant Prosecutor Melanie Falco, head of the Professional Responsibility Unit, is prosecuting the case. Gassman is represented by attorney Mitchell Ansell.
