SKOWHEGAN, ME — A Norridgewock man, Kendell Purnell, appeared in Somerset County Superior Court on Monday after being charged in connection with a fatal incident on Friday night.

Purnell, 30, was arraigned on two serious charges: intentional, knowing, or depraved indifference murder in relation to the death of Harold Burgess, and elevated aggravated assault in connection with injuries sustained by Shawn Haggan.

Somerset County Superior Court Chief Justice Robert Mullen informed Purnell that if convicted, he could face a lengthy prison sentence. The murder charge carries a sentence of 25 years to life, while the aggravated assault charge could result in up to 30 years behind bars.

The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. Friday at 40 Walnut Drive in Norridgewock, Maine, prompting a response from local first responders. Maine State Police have yet to release further details about the circumstances surrounding the crime, but the arraignment has set the stage for a significant legal battle in the coming months.

Purnell remains in custody pending further proceedings.
