In a major development in the fight against child trafficking, Karbi Anglong (Diphu) Police arrested two accused traffickers on Sunday evening for abducting and attempting to traffic a 9-year-old girl from Rengmai Colony, Dimapur, Nagaland.
The accused have been identified as Nitu Nath and Pratima Rajbongshi, also known as Mumtaz Begum, both residents of Kachua, Kampur in Nagaon district, Assam.
According to police, the duo posed as tenants in Rengmai Colony and abducted the minor on July 3. During interrogation, they confessed to selling the child in Arunachal Pradesh. Fortunately, swift intervention by the Village Defence Party (VDP) of Rongnihang Pathar, Diphu led to their timely capture.
The traffickers were handed over to the Diphu police, and on Monday, personnel from Dimapur Women Police Station arrived to take custody of the accused for further legal proceedings.
Authorities have commended the vigilance of the VDP, which played a critical role in preventing a serious crime. The rescued child is reportedly safe, and further investigations are ongoing to uncover potential links in the trafficking network.
