Nirjuli Police Arrest Man for Stealing Handbag and Carrying Out UPI Fraud

On December 18, 2024, Nirjuli Police arrested Nor Seeh (27) for allegedly stealing a woman’s handbag and using her phone to conduct unauthorized UPI transactions. The theft occurred on November 13, 2024, near the newly constructed bridge in Karsingsa, where the woman’s handbag containing Rs. 15,000 in cash, a mobile phone, and a SIM card linked to her SBI account was stolen from her car.

Over the next few days, the fraudster used the stolen phone to make UPI transactions amounting to approximately Rs. 14,000 from the victim’s bank account. The victim filed a complaint, which led to a police investigation. Based on technical analysis, the police traced the phone to a woman in possession of it, which eventually led to the identification of the accused.

During questioning, Nor Seeh confessed to being a habitual drug user and admitted to stealing the handbag. He revealed that he and an accomplice used the victim’s phone, generated OTPs, changed the GPay password, and carried out the fraudulent transactions while in Ziro, Lower Subansiri.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Naharlagun, Mihin Gambo, praised the Nirjuli police team for their swift action in solving the case and recovering the stolen items. He also reminded the public to be vigilant and ensure their vehicles are securely locked when parked.
