Bagalkot, Karnataka — In a significant cyber fraud case, Bagalkot district police have arrested a Nigerian national, Oliver Ogovu Okichikuvu, for allegedly duping a local woman of Rs5.5 lakh under the pretext of marriage.
The victim, a resident of Bagalkot, came in contact with the accused through social media. Posing as a prospective groom, Okichikuvu allegedly gained her trust over time and tricked her into transferring Rs5.5 lakh, citing various fabricated emergencies and promises related to marriage and settling in India.
After receiving the complaint, Bagalkot police initiated a technical investigation and tracked the accused to Mumbai, where he was staying under a false identity. A special team arrested him and brought him back to Bagalkot for further investigation.
Police suspect that Okichikuvu may be part of a larger romance scam network targeting Indian women through social media platforms. Authorities are currently verifying his travel history, online communications, and possible accomplices.
The case has raised fresh concerns about rising incidents of online romance and marriage frauds in India, especially those involving foreign nationals.
