Two men from Brooklyn, New York, were arrested in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, after allegedly attempting to exploit an elderly man diagnosed with dementia by cashing a fraudulent check.

On July 8, police received a call from the daughter of John Williams, an 80-something-year-old man diagnosed with dementia in May 2025, who sometimes experiences confusion. She alerted authorities after suspecting her father was being scammed.

According to an affidavit of probable cause, the suspects, identified as 50-year-old Nigel A. Sargeant and 32-year-old Dwayne W. Lawrence, were accompanying Williams to a PNC bank to cash the fraudulent check.

The two men were subsequently charged for their involvement in the scam targeting a vulnerable elder.
