On February 11th, detectives from the Picayune Police Department’s Special Operations Division made a significant drug bust following a routine traffic stop on Memorial Boulevard near South Haugh Avenue.
According to a press release from the department, officers initiated the stop after observing a traffic violation. The driver, identified as Nicky Smith, was arrested for careless driving. However, as officers conducted the stop, a K-9 unit alerted them to the presence of illegal narcotics within the vehicle.
A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of distribution quantities of methamphetamine, methadone, and fentanyl—three highly dangerous and illegal substances.
As a result, Smith was charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute. Authorities have emphasized the seriousness of these charges, given the hazardous nature of the drugs involved.
This operation highlights the effectiveness of coordinated traffic enforcement and K-9 units in detecting illegal substances, which continues to play a key role in reducing drug-related crime in the Picayune area. Smith now faces serious legal consequences for his alleged involvement in distributing controlled substances.
