MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Authorities are investigating a case of elder abuse after a malnourished, naked man was discovered living in filthy conditions in a Bethel Grove home. Nicholas Greenwood, 38, was arrested and charged with the abuse of a vulnerable adult following the grim discovery.
On Tuesday afternoon, officers responded to a call from a concerned friend of the victim. The woman expressed worry over the victim’s recent dramatic weight loss and claimed to have witnessed Greenwood beating the man into submission.
Upon arriving at the home on Arlington Avenue, officers were shocked by the living conditions they found. The house was cluttered, had a leaking roof, and smelled of feces. Inside, the victim was discovered lying naked in a bed, covered only by a rug. He was promptly transported to Baptist East Hospital in non-critical condition.
Greenwood told police he was simply an acquaintance of the victim and mentioned that two other people had been living at the residence. Despite his claims, Greenwood was the only individual taken into custody. He now faces charges of domestic assault, adult abuse, neglect, and exploitation. Greenwood is being held on a $200,000 bond.
The investigation is ongoing, with police urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
