ATHENS, Texas (KLTV) – The Athens High School community is reeling after the arrest of band director Nicholas Bartlett Durham, 45, following the discovery of suspected methamphetamine in his home.
According to the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office, Durham was taken into custody on Wednesday night after deputies executed a search warrant at his residence on Wood Street around 10:20 p.m. Investigators say Durham was found in possession of methamphetamine and was promptly arrested.
In response, Athens Independent School District (AISD) released a statement Thursday morning via Facebook, expressing shock and concern:
“Like many of you, we are deeply upset by this news and had no indication that would lead us to suspect this alleged behavior. While this incident did not occur on school property and did not involve students, we understand how troubling it is to our families and community.”
AISD confirmed that Durham has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation and due process. The district emphasized its commitment to upholding high professional standards for all staff, both in and outside of the classroom.
Despite the incident, school officials stated that the Athens High School band program will continue as scheduled, and they remain focused on maintaining a safe and student-centered environment.
Durham was booked into the Henderson County Jail late Wednesday. As of now, no additional charges or court dates have been announced.
