The National Investigation Agency (NIA), in coordination with Cachar police, arrested Thanglienlal Hmar alias Boya, a resident of Moinathol village in Dilkhosh Grant, Cachar, Assam. He is accused of playing a critical logistical role in the abduction and brutal murder of six Meitei individuals, including an infant, in Jiribam district, Manipur, last year.
According to SSP Numal Mahatta of Cachar, Hmar facilitated the transportation of the victims—three women and three children—along with three armed assailants dressed in camouflage, moving them from Jakuradhar Ghat to Kaisalpunjee village Ghat by boat. The victims were later found murdered, triggering widespread outrage and escalating ethnic tensions in the region.
The arrest follows a prolonged investigation after the November 2024 incident. The Manipur High Court recently granted a one-month extension to the NIA to file its chargesheet, warning of strict action against any further delays. The case remains under intense public scrutiny, with court-supervised progress mandated through a Public Interest Litigation.
The apprehension of Thanglienlal Hmar marks a significant breakthrough, reflecting the joint efforts of the NIA and Cachar police to bring justice to the victims’ families. Authorities expect additional arrests as the probe continues.
