The Special Operations Group (SOG) arrested a 21-year-old competitive exam aspirant on Wednesday for allegedly possessing nearly Rs 10 lakh worth of mephedrone near the riverfront road in Ellisbridge.

Acting on a tip-off, SOG personnel intercepted Nayyar Raza Mufid Ahmed Qureshi near the Mahakali Mata Temple, located behind the Patang Hotel on the road leading to the Sabarmati Riverfront.

During a search, police allegedly recovered 94.86 grams of mephedrone (MD) valued at Rs 9.48 lakh. Including other seized materials, the total estimated value of the muddamal stood at Rs 9.54 lakh.

Qureshi, a native of Abu Road and currently residing near Kalupur Tower in Ahmedabad, was attending TT examination coaching classes at a private institute in the city. During preliminary interrogation, he allegedly told investigators that he had procured the contraband from Sohail Baloch, also a resident of Abu Road.

Police sources said the narcotics were transported to Ahmedabad by Baloch along with an associate, Naeem Sheikh. A portion of the consignment was allegedly supplied to a local contact, Salman Sheikh, while the remaining quantity was reportedly sold in small packets within the city to cover Qureshi’s personal expenses.

A case has been registered at the DCB police station under Sections 8(c), 22(c), and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Further investigation is underway to trace the wider network involved in the alleged drug supply chain.
