CALGARY, Alberta — Two Calgary men have been charged after allegedly embezzling more than $66,000 from a non-profit organization intended to serve the Bowness community.
According to Calgary police, the investigation began in April 2024 when board members of the Bowness Ratepayers Scout and Guide Hall Association reported suspicious financial discrepancies and missing funds.
The case stems from a 2022 proposal by two men who offered to rebrand the venue into a modern community gathering space. The board agreed, allowing the pair to oversee operations. However, police say one man unlawfully appointed himself general manager without formal approval.
Operating under the new name BowCommons and promoting events as Discover Bowness, the pair allegedly exploited their access to the venue and finances.
Police say between 2022 and 2024, the two men misappropriated over $66,000. They allegedly held events using the organization’s funds without paying proper fees, forged documents to gain financial control, and deposited fake receipts into personal bank accounts.
On Tuesday, Calgary police arrested and charged:
Nathan Michael Mizera, 41
Joshua Tyler Bredo, 40
Both face one count each of fraud over $5,000. They are expected to appear in a Calgary courtroom in August.
The Bowness Ratepayers Scout and Guide Hall Association is a long-standing non-profit focused on providing community access and event space.
