In a coordinated operation, the Nashik Road Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) arrested four individuals involved in stealing mobile phones from passengers traveling by train.
The police recovered stolen phones worth Rs 1.5 lakh from the accused, following an increase in complaints about mobile phone theft on trains running between Mumbai and Bhusawal.
According to a GRP official, the operation began after two passengers reported thefts during their journey from Mumbai to Bhusawal. Utilizing CCTV footage from the railway station, authorities tracked down the suspects on platform 4 at Nashik station.
When questioned, the suspects could not provide satisfactory explanations for their presence. They were taken into custody for further interrogation.
The arrested have been identified as Jassim Salim Sheikh, Rahul Shimpi, and Abdul Latif Halim Khan, all residents of Thane district. Police recovered five stolen phones valued at Rs 80,000 from them.
A fourth accused, Sunil Ambhore of Washim, was apprehended separately while attempting to sell a stolen mobile phone.
The police continue to investigate and are working to curb mobile phone thefts on trains in the region.
