NANAIMO, B.C. — Kerry Chang, a Nanaimo man wanted for failing to attend his sentencing hearing for drug trafficking, was arrested on Tuesday by the Nanaimo RCMP.

Chang, who is in his late 50s, was convicted on three counts of drug trafficking in 2023 but failed to appear for his sentencing hearing in September. A Canada-wide warrant was issued for his arrest, and his image was circulated by police to the public.

Chang was apprehended at a residence in Nanaimo without incident and remains in custody.

In April 2023, Chang had admitted in court to possessing more than 62 grams of fentanyl found in his bedroom during a police raid, claiming it was for personal use. However, when another 471 grams of fentanyl was discovered in his living room, he claimed it belonged to a friend.

The judge in the case noted that Chang was “heavily entrenched” in fentanyl trafficking, adding to the severity of the charges.
