The Nagpur Crime Branch has successfully cracked a high-profile burglary case by arresting four individuals, including notorious burglar Naresh Mahilange and his girlfriend, who is also a practicing lawyer. The gang is accused of stealing valuables worth Rs24 lakh from a residence in the Mahal area under Kotwali police station jurisdiction.
Naresh Mahilange, a repeat offender with over 100 burglaries on his record across Nagpur and nearby districts, was found to have been aided by his lawyer girlfriend. She not only helped secure bail for him in 18 previous cases but allegedly also participated in planning and executing the recent theft.
On June 3, Mahilange and his associate Amrapal Patil broke into the Jasani family’s locked home, stealing cash, gold, and jewellery. They also destroyed the CCTV DVR to erase evidence. However, police tracked Mahilange through CCTV footage, mobile phone signals, and even the analysis of his unique walking style.
Further investigations led to the arrests of Patil, the lawyer girlfriend, and Fardeen Khan, who helped sell the stolen goods. Police recovered stolen valuables worth Rs21 lakh, including gold, silver, and cash.
It was revealed that the lawyer used forged documents to purchase SIM cards and assisted the gang in fencing the stolen items. All four accused are now in custody and under interrogation as police probe their involvement in other unsolved cases.
The operation was led by DCP (Crime) Rahul Maknikar, with support from ACP Abhijit Patil and Additional CP Vasant Pardeshi. Investigations continue to uncover possible links to other burglaries across the city.
