A 40-year-old man named Shaikh allegedly strangled his 5-year-old stepdaughter in Mumbai and later disposed of her body in the Arabian Sea, police reported on Tuesday.

The grim case unfolded when the child’s body was discovered floating near Sassoon Dock in South Mumbai on Tuesday morning by Colaba police.

The young girl had been reported missing from the Antop Hill area in Central Mumbai. Her stepfather Shaikh and her mother, Nazia, a domestic help, had filed a missing complaint at the Antop Hill police station, officials said.

Initially, police registered a kidnapping case against an unknown person. During the investigation, CCTV footage from Antop Hill and surrounding areas showed the child with her stepfather, which raised suspicion.

After recovering the body from the sea, police arrested Shaikh for questioning. During interrogation, Shaikh allegedly confessed to strangling his stepdaughter and dumping her body in the Arabian Sea, officials confirmed.
