In a significant drug bust, the Mumbai Crime Branch arrested two individuals and seized a major consignment of Mephedrone (MD) drugs valued at Rs 10.08 crore in the international market. The operation was carried out based on intelligence gathered by senior police officer and encounter specialist Daya Nayak.
Acting on a tip-off, a team from Crime Branch Unit 9 raided a guest house near Dadar railway station. During the operation, Jahangir Sheikh (29) and Senual Sheikh (28) were arrested, and 5 kg 40 grams of Mephedrone, a synthetic stimulant classified as a New Psychoactive Substance (NPS), were recovered from their possession. As the team closed in, the suspects tried to flee but were swiftly apprehended.
The seized quantity of Mephedrone falls under the commercial category as defined by the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, highlighting the scale of the operation. Following the arrests, the Crime Branch has taken charge of the investigation to trace the source and wider network involved in the illegal drug trade.
Daya Nayak, a renowned veteran officer known for his significant contributions to Mumbai’s crime-fighting efforts, especially in tackling underworld syndicates linked to gangsters like Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Rajan, has been pivotal in the operation. Mephedrone, known for its euphoric and stimulant effects, has raised concerns due to its severe health risks, including addiction, paranoia, and hallucinations.
The Crime Branch is now focused on investigating the broader network behind this drug consignment and identifying other individuals involved in the illicit trade.
