The Njarakkal police recently arrested a 45-year-old man, Mujeeb Rahman from Vengara in Malappuram, in connection with a major online scam. The scam involved defrauding an Edavanakkad resident of over Rs 32 lakh, under the guise of a marriage proposal.
The victim had contacted a WhatsApp number listed in an online matrimonial advertisement. The person on the other end claimed to be ‘Shruti’, who lived in Bangalore and worked in the UK. The alleged woman built a rapport with the victim, promising to marry him, and convinced him that cryptocurrency trading was a lucrative investment opportunity.
Following the scammer’s advice, the victim downloaded two apps, Kucoin and Dune Coin, and began investing in cryptocurrency. He initially invested Rs 7.44 lakh in Kucoin, which he was directed to transfer to the Dune Coin app for further trading. Over several months, from October 2023 to February 2024, a total of more than Rs 32 lakh was transferred from the victim’s bank accounts to various recipients.
It wasn’t until later that the victim realized he had been scammed, prompting the police to take action. Mujeeb Rahman’s arrest has brought a halt to the fraudulent scheme, with the investigation continuing to uncover further details.
