SINGAPORE — Nine individuals were charged in court on June 2 for allegedly assisting scam syndicates by giving them access to their bank accounts or Singpass credentials.

Among the accused are Muhamad Saifullah Azuwan, 27, Cindy Yap Qinhan, 32, and Norsuliani Sulaiman, 41. They face multiple charges linked to various scams, including job scams, fake friend call scams, rental scams, and impersonation scams.

Six men – Muhamad Saifullah Azuwan, Yuvan Thirumaran, 24, Amarjit Singh Jugindar Singh, 50, Ang Yong Han, 19, Addy Amin Mohamed, 50, and Lee Jun Chye, 25 – each face between two and 19 charges.

Three women – Cindy Yap, Khoo Yun Xuan, 32, and Norsuliani – face up to three charges each.

They are accused of selling or relinquishing their bank accounts and Singpass credentials to criminal groups, which were then used to launder scam proceeds or commit identity fraud. Offences include abetment of cheating, assisting in retaining criminal proceeds, and violations under the Computer Misuse Act.

Police revealed that many were promised commissions of up to $9,000, but often received nothing. These cases are part of a broader crackdown, with 41 people expected to be charged this week for acting as money mules.

Scams in Singapore hit a record high in 2024, with victims losing $1.1 billion, a sharp rise from $651.8 million in 2023.

Under new sentencing guidelines introduced in August 2024, adult offenders face a minimum of six months’ jail, while those under 21 are subjected to reformative training.

Authorities urge the public to never share their bank or Singpass credentials, warning that misuse linked to criminal activity can result in up to three years’ jail, fines, or both.
