SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. — A Moore County man wanted in a harrowing animal cruelty case involving emaciated and deceased dogs has been arrested, according to the Moore County Sheriff’s Office.

Rodney Morrison was taken into custody on Saturday, July 12, in Southern Pines after warrants were issued for his arrest in connection with a disturbing animal neglect case that unfolded in Pinebluff. He was transported to the Moore County Detention Center, where he is being held on a $75,000 secured bond. His first court appearance is scheduled for August 6, 2025, in Moore County District Court.

The investigation began when deputies with the Moore County Sheriff’s Office Animal Services responded to a call about a stray dog on Woodglen Way in Pinebluff. Upon arrival, they discovered a severely emaciated dog wandering the neighborhood.

According to Sheriff Ronnie Fields, further investigation—assisted by tips from concerned residents—led deputies to a nearby home where they found one dog deceased and another in critical condition.

“This is one of the worst cases of animal neglect and cruelty I’ve seen in many years,” said Sheriff Fields. “There is no excuse for the suffering these animals endured.”

Despite efforts to save the remaining dogs, both had to be euthanized due to their deteriorating condition.

Deputies identified Rodney Morrison as the owner of the dogs. Although they spoke with him multiple times, he allegedly failed to return to the property or cooperate with the investigation. A search warrant was later executed to ensure no additional animals were inside the residence.

Following the investigation, Morrison was charged with three counts of felony cruelty to animals. His arrest comes after weeks of public concern and an active search.

The Moore County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate and has reiterated its commitment to protecting animals and prosecuting cruelty to the fullest extent of the law.
