RANKIN COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) — A Jackson man is facing serious drug trafficking charges after being arrested at the Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport with nearly 500 grams of psilocybin mushrooms in his luggage.
According to Investigator Tyler Burnell of the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office, local narcotics investigators and officers from the Jackson Municipal Airport Authority (JMAA) received a tip about a suspicious passenger aboard an inbound flight on April 15.
After the flight landed around noon, a K-9 unit conducted a sweep of the luggage being offloaded. The dog alerted officers to two bags linked to a passenger later identified as Monroe Milton III, 38, of Jackson.
Burnell said Milton admitted there was one pound of mushrooms in his luggage before deputies conducted a full search. Inside the bags, investigators found:
493 grams of psilocybin mushrooms in a clear zip-tied bag
Multiple jars of hemp/marijuana products totaling 68 grams
Drug paraphernalia
Milton was arrested and charged with trafficking a controlled substance. He was transported to the Rankin County Detention Center, where his bond was set at $100,000.
Authorities did not release additional information about the flight or Milton’s intended destination. The investigation remains ongoing.
