In a major drug smuggling operation crackdown, customs officials at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport arrested three individuals for attempting to smuggle 25kg of high-grade hydroponic marijuana, worth approximately Rs25 crore, from Hong Kong.

The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU), acting on specific intelligence, intercepted Surat residents Mohammed Shaikh and his wife Tabassum Shaikh shortly after their arrival from Hong Kong. A search of their luggage uncovered 13 vacuum-sealed packets of a suspicious green substance. Preliminary testing confirmed it to be hydroponic weed, a potent strain of marijuana.

During interrogation, the couple confessed they were delivering the consignment to Alfiyah Rampurawala, a woman from Bhayander, who was waiting outside the terminal. Officials swiftly detained Rampurawala at the airport exit.

She revealed that she was instructed by two handlers, Abu Bakar and Nasir Bhai, to collect the contraband. They had shared photographs and contact information of the Shaikhs to facilitate the handoff.

All three arrested—Mohammed, Tabassum, and Alfiyah—have been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. A search is now underway for Abu Bakar and Nasir Bhai, believed to be key players in the smuggling ring.
