ACCRA, Ghana — A 29-year-old former supervisor, Mohammed Salisu, has been sentenced to three years in prison by an Accra Circuit Court for the theft of two industrial sewing machines valued at GH¢5,000 each from a warehouse in Spintex.

Salisu pleaded guilty to charges of unlawful entry and theft. His co-defendant, Mahama Shitu, was discharged after Salisu admitted to acting alone and only involving Shitu to help transport the stolen items.

Presiding judge Samuel Bright Acquah accepted Salisu’s confession and cleared Shitu of any wrongdoing, based on lack of knowledge or intent.

Inspector Shiela Tetteh, prosecuting, said the complainant, a businesswoman based in Sakumono, had previously employed Salisu as a supervisor at her bakery and restaurant. Salisu, who resided in Nungua, was suspected in a separate case of stealing a Motor King vehicle worth GH¢39,000 in October 2024.

He was arrested and released on bail, only to return the same night and use his access keys to steal the two sewing machines. He then fled the area, packing up his belongings and disappearing from the jurisdiction.

Police efforts to locate him continued until February 28, 2025, when CCTV footage placed Salisu with Shitu, who was arrested and later cooperated with police. Shitu led officers to Agona Swedru, where Salisu had been hiding, but Salisu fled upon seeing the authorities.

Eventually, Salisu was captured in Nungua on March 3, 2025. During questioning, he confessed to selling the machines in Togo for GH¢2,000, but refused to disclose the buyer’s identity. Shitu maintained he was unaware the goods were stolen, leading to his release.
