A joint team of Kolkata Police and Delhi Police on Tuesday apprehended Mohammad Shorab, a notorious gangster who had fled from Tihar Jail, officials said.
Shorab, 38, a resident of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, was out on parole in June 2025 citing his wife’s illness but failed to return to jail when his parole ended on July 4. He had been hiding in Topsia, Kolkata, reportedly living in disguise and working as an app cab driver.
Shorab is serving a life sentence for multiple murders and robbery cases in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. Police said he is involved in around 20 criminal cases, including six to seven murders and several attempted murders. He was also part of a gang run with his brothers, Salim and Rustam.
Notable crimes include:
Committing three murders in an hour on Eid in 2005, for which he was later arrested.
Arrest in 2011 alongside a brother for the robbery of a gold shop and murder in Delhi’s Karol Bagh, leading to a life sentence.
A senior Kolkata Police officer stated, “During a prolonged search with technical assistance, Shorab was traced to a house on Ripon Street, Kolkata, and arrested.”
Following his escape, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh Police had formed a special investigation team to locate him. Shorab was currently staying at a relative’s house in Topsia while evading law enforcement.
Authorities said Shorab’s arrest marks a significant breakthrough in tracking down high-profile criminals who exploit parole to evade justice.
