In a shocking revelation, Thane Police arrested two individuals for allegedly repackaging expired food and household products to resell in the market, violating public health and safety laws.
The arrests followed a police raid on two storage facilities in the Dahisar area of Shil-Daighar, where officials discovered 200 tonnes of expired goods. The operations were conducted on July 9 and 10, according to police reports issued on Sunday and cited by news agency PTI.
Arrested Individuals:
Mohammad Irfan Mohammad Munir Chowdhary (41)
Mohammad Akram Mohammad Ismail Shaikh (58)
Both men were identified as partners in a recycling and waste management firm based in Bhiwandi.
According to police, a tip-off revealed that expired products, originally sent for safe destruction by an e-commerce company, were being illegally repurposed and stored for future resale.
The seized stockpile included:
Food grains
Cereals and flour
Sugar and rice
Dry fruits
Sanitary pads and toilet cleaners
Branded soaps and washing powders
Police noted that the original labels were removed, and the products were repacked in plastic and gunny bags—ready for illegal distribution across Bhiwandi and nearby markets.
