Rohit Suresh Kamble, an 18-year-old mobile phone snatcher, was arrested by the Bharti Vidyapeeth Police after he was caught stealing phones from pedestrians using the pretext of asking for directions. The authorities recovered six mobile phones and a two-wheeler worth Rs1.9 lakh from his possession.
Kamble, a resident of Jadhav Nagar, Gujarwadi Phata, Katraj, was apprehended following a complaint filed by a youth who was targeted near Gujarwadi Phata on May 1. The victim, who was walking at around 10 p.m. while speaking on his phone, was approached by two individuals on a motorcycle. They pretended to ask for directions, and when the victim became distracted, Kamble snatched the phone from his hand and fled.
Senior Police Inspector Sawalaram Salgaonkar immediately directed his team to trace the culprits. After receiving a tip-off, the police discovered the suspects were from Gujarwadi, and they identified Rohit Suresh Kamble and Salman Shaikh as the culprits. Kamble was later arrested in Bharat Nagar, and the police recovered the stolen phones and a motorcycle from him.
The seized items included six mobile phones, valued at approximately Rs90,000, and a two-wheeler worth Rs1 lakh. The investigation into the phones and the vehicle is still ongoing, with police seeking to track down further suspects linked to the thefts.
The operation was conducted under the leadership of Additional Commissioner of Police Praveenkumar Patil, Deputy Commissioner Smarta Patil, and Assistant Commissioner Rahul Aware, along with the diligent efforts of the investigation team, including Senior PI Sawalaram Salgaonkar and the Crime Branch PI Rahulkumar Khilare.
