Aizawl, Nov 3: Mizoram Excise and Narcotics Department officials seized over 15 kg of highly addictive methamphetamine tablets, valued at Rs 45 crore, and arrested four drug peddlers in India, including two Myanmar nationals, on Monday.
During an operation in the New Champhai region, authorities apprehended Zamsianmanga (41) and Ronald Liana (26), both from Sagaing Division, Myanmar, with 10.1 kg of meth tablets, while they were in Indian territory.
In a second operation near Champhai town, police intercepted a vehicle and recovered 5.11 kg of meth tablets, arresting two Indian nationals: Sahanoor Alom (26) from Assam and Golap Hussain (32) from Tripura. The Assam-registered car used for smuggling was confiscated.
All four suspects were arrested in India and booked under the NDPS Act, 1985, with cases registered at Champhai Police Station.
Officials said the seizure marks a significant haul in the crackdown on cross-border drug smuggling from Myanmar into Mizoram. Champhai and other border districts are increasingly exploited for trafficking methamphetamine, synthetic drugs, arms, and exotic animals.
Methamphetamine tablets, also called Yaba or party tablets, are banned in India. Myanmar shares a 1,643 km unfenced border with four northeastern states—Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, and Nagaland—making it a major drug transit route. Mizoram districts bordering Myanmar, including Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip, are frequently used for smuggling operations.
