In one of the biggest-ever drug seizures in Mizoram, the police have confiscated 236.33 kg of methamphetamine tablets, valued at around Rs 30.72 crore. The seizure took place on Sunday night in Vanzau village, located in the Champhai district, near the Myanmar border.
According to officials, acting on intelligence inputs, the police intercepted a vehicle traveling from Thinghrangkawn to Bungzung, both bordering villages in Champhai district. Upon searching the vehicle, they discovered the highly addictive methamphetamine tablets—over two crore pills hidden inside the vehicle.
The two drug peddlers, identified as Laltanpuia (30) and Vanropuia (27), both residents of Champhai town, were arrested in connection with the drug trafficking operation. A case has been filed under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The authorities confirmed that the methamphetamine, also known as Yaba or party tablets, was smuggled from Myanmar. The drugs were intended to be transported for consumption in various regions of India, including metropolitan cities, or even exported to international markets where the demand for methamphetamine is on the rise.
In a separate incident, security forces in Manipur’s Churachandpur district seized 1.3 kg of heroin. The heroin, concealed in 108 soap cases, was discovered by Assam Rifles troops and Manipur Police during an operation. Letminthang, 29, a resident of Chandel district, was arrested in connection with the heroin seizure.
