In a major operation, security forces in Mizoram and Assam have seized a large quantity of methamphetamine, valued at Rs 42 crore, and arrested three drug traffickers, including two nationals from Myanmar. This was reported by authorities on Tuesday.
A spokesperson for the defense stated that nearly 9.3 kilograms of methamphetamine, also known as Yaba or party tablets, were recovered at the Vangkai crossing in Champhai district of Mizoram. The drugs, estimated to be worth Rs 27.9 crore, were seized in a coordinated effort, which led to the arrest of two Myanmar nationals—Lalthangvela (28) and Zaithangpuia (26). Both were apprehended after they entered India illegally, transporting the drugs from Myanmar through the porous Champhai border.
Following the arrest, the drugs and the suspects were handed over to the Zokhawthar Police for further investigation and legal action.
In a separate operation in Assam, Cachar district Police, acting on reliable intelligence, intercepted a Maruti Wagoner at Ramprasadpur, which was found to be carrying a significant amount of narcotics. Police discovered 40,000 methamphetamine tablets and 260 grams of suspected heroin hidden in secret compartments. The total value of the seized drugs is approximately Rs 14 crore. The vehicle’s driver, Rakesh Kumar Sinha (24), from Hatikhal village, was arrested.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the drugs were transported from Churachandpur in Manipur. Authorities are continuing their legal proceedings against the suspects.
Mizoram’s border with Myanmar, which stretches 510 kilometers, remains a key route for drug trafficking, especially methamphetamine and heroin. The area is notorious for its role in cross-border drug smuggling, involving both Myanmar and neighboring states like Assam, Manipur, and Nagaland. From India, the drugs are often smuggled into Bangladesh, further complicating efforts to curb the flow of illegal substances.
