The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has successfully apprehended Mintu Das, also known as Rohit Chandra Das, the alleged mastermind of a large-scale online trading fraud. The arrest took place on Tuesday in New Delhi, marking a significant milestone in the investigation.

Mintu Das, who operates the Indian Institute of Banking & Information Technology (IIBIT) in Guwahati, had been on the run since January. His arrest follows the registration of an FIR on September 4, 2024, under various sections of the Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes Act, 2019, along with other criminal charges.

Das had reportedly deceived numerous victims by advertising high-return, risk-free stock market investments in newspapers. Initially, small dividends were paid to investors to build trust, but payments soon stopped, leaving investors with no returns on their principal amounts.

The case was first registered at Bhangagarh Police Station before being transferred to the CBI, which re-registered the case on October 14, 2024. The scam affected investors not only in Assam but also in several other states.

The investigation revealed that Das had no intention of fulfilling his financial promises. Moreover, he even resorted to threatening those who sought legal recourse for their losses.

Relying on digital evidence and inputs from reliable sources, the CBI tracked Das’s movements, ultimately leading to his arrest in New Delhi. He is currently being brought to Assam under transit remand and will be produced before a court for further proceedings.
