SPRING HILL, Fla. (CBS12) — An 18-year-old is behind bars after allegedly opening fire on two teenagers who tried to steal his marijuana, leaving one teen with gunshot wounds.
The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) responded Monday to the area of Maximilian Avenue and Hazelcrest Street in Spring Hill after reports of a shooting around 4 p.m. Dispatchers reported that a 14-year-old boy had been shot in the hip and arm.
The suspect, identified as Michael Nanzrio, had already fled the scene by car before deputies arrived. A 15-year-old who was with the victim was not injured in the shooting.
Initially, the teens claimed a stranger had driven by and shot them. However, investigators later uncovered that the two had planned to steal marijuana from Nanzrio. During the attempted theft, Nanzrio began driving away—firing shots at the teens as he fled, deputies said.
Later that day, deputies located Nanzrio at his Bromley Avenue residence and arrested him without incident.
He has been booked on charges of:
Aggravated battery
Aggravated assault
Discharging a firearm in public
The injured teen was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The case remains under investigation.
