On December 17, 2024, two men, Michael Cordones-Lopez, 24, and Patricio Cardones-Molina, 61, were arrested in Silver Spring, Maryland, for stealing nearly $50,000 worth of used cooking oil from local restaurants. The suspects were caught in the act by Montgomery County police, who followed them after spotting their van near several grease dumpsters. The suspects siphoned oil from two restaurants, including the Fillmore Silver Spring and Amina Thai Silver Spring, using a prybar and large tanks in their van. The stolen oil, valued at approximately $47,000, is typically sold to biodiesel companies. Both suspects were charged and released on bond.
