Tampa, FL – Michael Canty, 54, has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of Dawn Morrison, 48. Morrison’s body was found partially buried in mulch near the drive-thru lane of Church’s Chicken on East Fletcher Ave. in Tampa, Florida, back in June.

Canty and Morrison were reportedly seen on surveillance footage outside the fast-food restaurant on the night of June 15 at around 11:30 p.m. According to court records, the two met for a drug transaction. Within 30 minutes, a woman’s voice could be heard yelling for help, followed by a brief power outage at the Church’s Chicken that stopped the video feed.

In the hours following, surveillance footage from a nearby McDonald’s captured Canty walking back and forth between the Church’s Chicken drive-thru and a McDonald’s dumpster. At one point, prosecutors say Canty changed his clothes, which were later found to have blood stains.

During a court hearing on Wednesday, Canty’s attorneys argued for his release on bail, but Judge Christopher Sabella denied the request. Sabella ruled that the circumstances presented in court, including the surveillance footage and blood evidence, showed a substantial probability that Canty had committed a dangerous crime.

The judge stated, “There are no conditions of release or bail that would reasonably protect the community from risk of physical harm or ensure the defendant’s presence at trial. Therefore, I will grant the state’s motion for pretrial detention.”

As of now, Canty remains in custody, facing charges in connection with the death of Dawn Morrison.
