A Miami man has been arrested in connection with the theft of a trailer containing $100,000 worth of frozen bacon, authorities reported. Marcos Gonzalez-Bernal, 40, is charged with grand theft of cargo over $50,000, grand theft vehicle, and unlawful use of a communications device.
The theft occurred during the early morning hours of September 2, when a 53-foot refrigerated semi-trailer valued at $80,000, containing 192 pounds of frozen bacon, was stolen from a Daytona Beach parking lot. Surveillance footage revealed a blue SUV canvassing the area before parking next to the trailer. Moments later, a semi-truck arrived, hooked up the trailer, and drove off.
Investigators later identified a blue Volvo XC 90, which was spotted by a license plate reader near the scene of the theft. Additional plate readers tracked the trailer and Volvo as they traveled south down the state.
On September 8, Miami-Dade Police located the Volvo and found Gonzalez-Bernal driving it. At the time, he was arrested for driving with a suspended license. A subsequent search warrant was executed for his car and cell phones. Phone records indicated that Gonzalez-Bernal’s phones were in the vicinity of the cargo theft on the day the bacon was stolen.
Detectives later located the stolen trailer on September 24. Gonzalez-Bernal was booked into jail and appeared before a judge, who set his bond at $30,000.
The investigation into the theft continues, and Gonzalez-Bernal remains in custody awaiting further legal proceedings.
