MAGEE, Miss. (VDN) — A Vicksburg native, Melvin Wiggins Jr., was arrested in Magee, Mississippi early Monday morning after police discovered he was driving under the influence and unlawfully in possession of a firearm.
According to the Magee Police Department, officers responded around 5:30 a.m. to reports of a disabled vehicle with its hazard lights flashing on Highway 49 North near Austin Storage. Upon arrival, officers found Wiggins slumped over in the driver’s seat.
As officers asked Wiggins to exit the vehicle, they spotted a handgun on the floorboard near his feet. Police immediately observed signs of impairment and initiated a DUI investigation, confirming that Wiggins was under the influence.
Further checks revealed that Wiggins is a convicted felon, making it illegal for him to possess a firearm. He was placed under arrest and charged with DUI and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may be considered pending further review.
